Anupam Kher’s inspiring journey from sleeping on the Bandra East railway platform during his struggling days in Mumbai to becoming a globally acclaimed actor is a powerful story of resilience. The veteran star recalls hardship, depression, and rejection before his breakthrough role in Saaransh changed his life forever.
Born in Shimla to a modest family, Anupam Kher moved to New Delhi, where he trained in acting at the National School of Drama and graduated as a gold medalist. Despite his academic excellence and professional training, his arrival in Mumbai marked the beginning of an intense struggle. He recently shared in an interview with Times Now that he spent nearly 27 days sleeping on the Bandra East railway platform while attempting to establish himself in the film industry.
During this period of extreme hardship, Kher faced severe financial instability, emotional breakdowns, and psychological pressure. He admitted that the humiliation of being an educated individual living under such conditions deeply affected him and, at one point, he even considered returning home, feeling overwhelmed by the circumstances.
He also revealed that he experienced episodes of depression and sadness during this phase of his life. To cope with the mental strain, he created an imaginary world in which he always envisioned himself as a victorious hero, a mindset that helped him endure the struggles and maintain hope during his most difficult days.
Over time, these experiences shaped his perspective on life, teaching him to view suffering and failure as sources of future strength and storytelling. Kher has often reflected that difficult moments later become the foundation of meaningful life narratives.
His breakthrough came in 1984 with Mahesh Bhatt’s film “Saaransh,” where, at the age of 28, he portrayed a 65-year-old grieving father. His powerful performance received widespread critical acclaim and instantly established him as a serious actor in the film industry. Following this landmark role, his career gained unstoppable momentum, leading to consistent success across hundreds of films.
Today, at 71 years of age, Anupam Kher stands as one of the most respected and versatile actors in the industry, having appeared in more than 500 films across Indian cinema and international projects, including Hollywood. His journey from sleeping on a railway platform to achieving global recognition remains a powerful testament to perseverance, resilience, and unwavering belief in one’s dreams.
